Portfolio of Diversity and Political Society (PODAPS) Introduction We live in a time of political correctness-perhaps at times a little too much- and as such our syllabi should are certainly beginning to reflect not just subject content but social movement. A prominent example of this is English ( the content of comprehensions, poems and visual literarcy and the manner questions are asked that force thought) The syllabi of schools we can thus say are no longer static but in need of constant change and said change should not merely be facilitated by (which this portfolio will formalise and create an efficient process for) but should too be open to the legitimate criticism by those it is being taught to. This extends not only to the syllabi of the school but general the school environment and administrative ecosystem (the interpretation of the Code of Conduct where relevant, the organising of events that affect students ect). While this portfolio will provide a unified platform for the above it is not unique in recognition of the need to represent student population. Its precursors are the formation of the Portfolio for LGBTQI populations and Portfolio for Immigrant Populations. Practicality in set-up With an evident need to set up a portfolio of this nature this proposal in order to mitigate setting a precedent of the formation of a fractured representation of student populations-the formation of numerous separate portfolios for different student populations- recommends the following merger. - Portfolio for LGBTQI populations and Portfolio for Immigrant Populations.should be included in a broader sub-portfolio of student diversity whithin this portfolio. This will not dissolve these portfolios and their functions. They acted as the precursor that highlighted the need of this portfolio. Rather include their functions and representatives under a unified banner to fulfil aforementioned mitigation to create a stronger unified system of student population representation and concern. This merger will act as the initial step for the evolution of the portfolio to include all student populations (gender, culture ect) under this portfolios banner to push for diversity and change outlined in the introduction of this proposal. This portfolio will thus be a conglomeration of prior portfolios and include their potential representatives and extend the principle of their functions to the broader student population among other extended functions Considering the broader nature of this portfolio its recommendation is complementary to the recommendation of the SRB which will allow for better focus on its mandate (although its mandate has naturally-in the event of a lack of a SRB-been extended to seeking out communication) and taking action. This portfolio will thus ensure not only diversity of population representation but too ensure this is equitable if necessary or at least push for it. PODAPS mandate - Ensure diverse representation is achieved within the SRC/SRB - With said diversity to act to ensure the needs or issues of all student populations are attended to and acted upon. - Establish student sentiment on political matters in relation to the school environment (best via a SRB model) - Allow for mechanisms that allow educators access to current student political sentiment at given times, to establish relevant debate in class or in the curriculum if required (best via a SRB model) - Push for the schools political environment to be relevant Conclusion This is a required portfolio, whether implemented this year (hopefully, substantially easier to start early ) or the next year it will appear in some embodiment or another (fractured or unified) and the choice to properly facilitate it is ours.
